When you walk into a land-based casino and sit down at a table, you expect to have a good time. Furthermore, you expect the dealer to be in an exceptionally good mood and enjoy their job as it provides better playing and more of an ease when playing if this case is so. However, what if the dealer is not what you expect? What if the dealer is just there because he gets a paycheck and it pays decent? That is not the attitude that you want your dealer to have. Ideally, you want a dealer that is chatty, sociable, and is such plain interesting and maybe even a little bit of fun!
So, what do you do if you come across this type of dealer that you long for? You tip them of course! By tipping the dealer, you are letting them know that you appreciate the way they act at the table. Thus, this will create a better atmosphere for you and your opponents because the dealer will realize that he is liked and he is doing his job well. In addition, the dealers usually make minimum wage, majority of their profit is off of the tips received by players..., which is probably why they try to be talkative, and fun because they know it is well worth their while.
Now, two questions remain: When do you tip the dealer and how much? For the most part that will be up to you as the player; however, let's take a look at a possible guide to help you out in tipping the dealer.
Well, obviously, the amount that you give the dealer as well as how frequently will surely depend on the dealer. If the dealer is making your game fun and helping you in the ways that he can (which isn't many, but still) then I have always tipped about once every hour, hour and a half. Then, of course, if you are succeeding and claiming victories, you may wish to do more than that, which is just fine as well. I would not personally say to tip the dealer every winning hand because that is just too much of an overstatement in my own personal opinion. I would say to tip about every hour, hour and a half, and you can add one additional tip (or increase the amount of the tip) when you are winning.
As far as how much you should tip the dealer, I would say that would strongly depend on your bankroll and just how much you are winning. It will also depend on yourself as well - the way you are feeling - gracious or more reserved. Most people will probably give about a five dollar tip or so would be appropriate and you could always throw in a little extra if you are winning or feeling cordial. The choice would obviously be yours.
Since we are talking about tipping the dealer, one thing is very important when you are at a land-based casino as there are rules at hand. Never, ever, actually hand the chips to the dealer as the tip. You should also lay them down on the table for the dealer to pick up and accept. Obviously, you need to let them know what it is for, otherwise, they may have no clue at all.
Have fun the next time you go play at the casino, and remember, tip your dealer if he is doing a good job - it will make him create a better atmosphere for you (if he isn't already) and will give you a better overall playing experience! Good luck!
